Society in Conflict

My home country concerns me. It seems we are divided. Deeply divided. Pray for people like me, who after many years away from the USA, don't recognize it anymore and wonder how long our support bases will remain. I know God has it under control and if it all goes "to hell in a handbasket," He will see us through. Part of the problem is that from afar I can't figure out who America is anymore.

Shame on Fox Sports for firing someone over their religious views on sexual morality. It seems the pendulum is swinging so far to the other side that those who have long wanted equality and a say are going to do everything possible to guarantee only their side has a say and only those like them are equal.

Hurray for the pope speaking out for immigrants and for the poor. The positive side, maybe sliver is better, of the "Occupy Wall Street" movement was that it pointed out the exploitation of so many by so few for so much. When I read about handicapped citizens in my country being paid 3 and 4 cents an hour for their job at the Goodwill, I can think of law changes that would criminalize such behavior.

I'm concerned that in some churches your party affiliation is seen as part of discipleship. One can't possibly be an obedient follower of Christ without being a Republican, in the mind of some. Can I say something that may put this in perspective? There is no hope in any political party; if we can't learn at least that much from history, including that unfolding before us, then we are getting what we deserve. As a believer, I have the obligation to pray for my leaders, obey the laws of the land unless they are at odds with God's laws, and to never fall into the trap of believing in the goodness and rightness of political power.
